It will be better to come out from the West Gate of the Taj Mahal because from this gate the Agra fort is just 1 to 2 kilometers away. If you come out from the East Gate then the approximate distance of Agra Fort from the Taj will be 3 to 4 kilometers.

Although both the landmarks are situated just walking distance away from each other, still I suggest you go via rickshaws and autorickshaws as they know the many shortcuts and will drop you at the destination in no time. Also, the travel fare is very cheap so you won’t mind traveling in one.
