History & Interesting Facts Of Jai Vilas Palace Gwalior

Jai Vilas Palace is a heritage royal residential palace in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh. It is an 18th-19th century palace of the former royal Maratha-Scindia dynasty. The palace was established by Jayajirao Scindia, the King of Gwalior in the year 1874.

The major part of the palace was converted into a museum in the year 1964 named HH Maharaja Sir Jiwajirao Scindia Museum, while the remaining part is still the residence of the descendants of the royal family.

The palace is popularly known by several other names, such as Scindia Mahal, Jai Vilas Mahal, Gwalior Museum, Scindia Museum, and Gwalior Mahal. It is one of the most expensive properties in India.

The main reason to build the Jai Vilas Mahal was to welcome Prince George and Princess Mary of Wales who visited India in 1876. Jyotiraditya Scindia, the titular King of Gwalior is the current owner of the palace.

According to the Incredible India Tourism information, when the palace was being built, eight elephants were suspended from the ceiling of the Durbar Hall to estimate if the roof was strong enough or not.

The Jai Vilas Palace has a total of 400 rooms and out of these, 35 have been converted into a museum wing. Among these rooms, there is a hall where the king used to hold his meetings. The interior of that hall is embellished with more than 5o0 kg of gold.

In the banquet room of the Jai Vilas Palace, on the dining table, there is a train model, made of solid silver. It was used for carrying brandy and cigars for the guests sitting at the dining table.

The beautiful Jai Vilas Palace cost 1 crore in 1874, if we talk about today’s time then the palace has a value of about 10,000 crores.
