Gwalior Fort - History & Mind Blowing Facts

The Fort of Gwalior is an iconic historic monument that express the culture of bygone era and, a bubbling tourist destination.

The fort has a history dating back to the 10th century. It was built by Tomar Rajput but it was controlled by different rulers in history.

The fort is known for having the second oldest zero recorded in history was found in one of the temples located inside the fort. A stone inscription that shows proof of the second oldest zero was in the temple.

This fort has a defensive structure. In other words, we can say that the fort is so strong that even if someone tries to attack it, the fort will standstill.

Inside the Fort, there is a temple which is known as Sas Bahu Temple. In India, two deities Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshiped most. In the 9th Century, a conflict occurred between Royal Mother in Law and Daughter in Law about which deity to worship. Thus, to satisfy them this unique temple was made in which statues of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshiped.

Gopachal rock-cut Jain monuments, also called Gopachal Parvat, are a group of Jain carvings dated to between 7th and 15th century. They are located around the walls of the Gwalior Fort.

Gwalior Fort was also used as a prison during the era of Akbar. It was Akbar who turned this fort into a prison in 1858. Many Royal people were imprisoned here.
